Calico in Covid Times - Newsletter Spring 2021

Hi Everyone!  I have been a little pre-occupied with Covid times as has my human pet parent!!!

It certainly is lovely to have her home more often, so I can take advantage of the extra care and attention, the pampering, she is always at my beck-and-call.πŸ’œπŸ’Ÿ

I certainly to feel like Queen these days!!!!πŸ’œπŸ‚½πŸ‚½

She will even grow cat grass for me, each morning, I jump onto the windowsill on my vet's fleece (it is so cozy...and wait for the sunshine to creep around.

To bring in the bright sun!  It wonderful to take your time to wash your face and get those whiskers all shinny and clean!

Cat grass takes time to germinate (geez), those funny looking oat grass in the black soil.  I've been told not poke or disturb them....it's just too tempting....(LOL)πŸ˜‹.  She waters it every three days, and I look for the little sprouts to appear.....sooner or later little green soots poke up. Then they become junior blades of grass (I tell her no she can't have any, for her human salad LOL).

I actually had a visitor in the window ledge outside, a  (delicious looking) beautiful pigeon with grey body and pink markings.  Luckily she didn't see me.....as I stalked her through the glass windowpane. When she wasn't looking I would creep behind her and pounce with my big baseball paws.  Maine Coon cats have them, so it's been a valuable asset to have.  To my dismay, she flew off out of harm's way...I expect she will be back though as they also like to glean in the afternoon sun!

Well, in these Covid times, I've been doing a lot of sleeping, playing with catnip mice, dreaming about stories to write on my blog post.  Chasing my human, sleeping on my new flannel shirt (believe me you don't want to share of move so cozy). Inspecting the dwelling where I live in the morning and before bedtime.   Yep they call me "Miss Sherlock".   (My pet parent has been reading a truly 'thrilling book, that as she says like being on a roller coaster of suspense called "Secret Sky" by J.P. Mclean - Author, a great Canadian ....check it out)!   I've often caught my pet after midnight reading, then my breakfast is really late!

Living in a busy urban city, there is lots to see and do...we have mechanical cranes in the distance, not the ones that I prefer that fly and might make a nice stew!  I'll have to speak to my cat mum about that!

I'm a Calico Red Patch-Tabby, with infusions Calico white big tummy and white socks and paws, and a sprinkle of Maine Coon for good measure.

My new human friend Kris told me about I am likely to be a red patch tabby, as she operates  a cat rescue organization.   So much fun to learn about cat-gen-etics!!

Newsletter from Pet Mum: When My Three Year Becomes A Diva or She's Just Like a 15 Year Old - April 10 2017

Pet "Mum" has her say!

Dear Reader :  I just had to write....Well, there comes a point in every "Mum's" life where she has to speak out use her 'Diva Voice' or what I call 'She Bear'.

I grabbed the laptop away from the "Diva" while she was having a cat nap after a huge Springtime feed!  It's just as well as I stocked up..on food...(and have to hide it in the bedside table) almost under lock and key against the huge paws of the Calico/Tabby/Maine Coon!
(Sound echoing as fridge door screams "Close the Door").  No one reads the note on the fridge:  "Decide what you want BEFORE you OPEN the Door"!
 Need I say more!
Cali at 2 months old - Innocence!

I'm sure all of you can relate in having human toddlers in various stages of growth, discovery, toys everywhere.  What used to be NEAT for a moment in time...before bed becomes chaos -- toys scattered from laundry baskets.  Kittens with limitless boundaries, tip towing over plant pots - you really can't ground proof everything or can you?  Most of us with toddlers or kittens sleep with "one eye open" and in have mode what I call 'intuition alertness'.  Do they make coffee EXTRA, EXTRA strong?

Look mum  I'm slightly bigger ans wiser now,

Yes, you provide the most comfortable perch whatever that is, piles of vet's fleece (an excellent heat conductor - without electricity).  I even donated a flannel nightgown for the offering!

Days fall into months, you wonder if you will have enough hair in your head to survive the 'hair pulling' thinking "Oh what did she get into now".  Social time is making coffee and watching daytime TV.  Luckily nature will not leave you looking like those well worn dolls toddlers have with little or no hair - like strands of hair in a well worn swim cap.

I'm 2 and incorrigible

What happened to kitten hood?
10 Things Teenagers and Young Cat 2 Have in Common:

1) I will eat you out of house and home;
2) I will manipulate and outsmart you'
3) Just when you think things are normal, chaos will prevail;
4) I will sleep at odd times during the day so you can't at night. Hunting time begins at 11.59 p.m.
5)  I have selective deafness at will (even though my hearing is perfect and better than yours;
6) I am the master of my routines and will disrupt yours;
7) Counting to 10 ten won't work because I refused to learn. Beside 4 pays is enough and for humans only 5 fingers on one hand.  good enough
8) I can stand beside the fridge door, leaving it open until I decide to EAT;
9) My hunting skills awake at night, and teenagers party all night good planning there
10) I love to sleep in in the morning a sense of humour is healthy!
Oh Really - Mum Give Up on the Singing Leave it to the Birds.

Don't you see a similarity here between cat and teenager - Attitude =  Attitude
Too Right - Cats and Teens Are Really Doing This Behind You

Well, I guess I'm a little 'Older and Wiser, and perhaps metaphorically grayer.
What happen to kitten hood, did I fall asleep one night and wake up to a young adult cat? Who is now 3 years old.  A demanding Diva, with Tricks up her paws!
Well, live goes on and I expect Cali will have something to say as a rebuttal of this post.  It was worth a try...."Dear Reader"  I'm sure  you have your own stories too.

Dogs are so 'well behaved'!!!!

Come back soon for the next posting.......!  (Excuse me while I YAWN).

Mother's Day or Attention Seeking Behavior 101- Cali's Corner

Well Hello Kitties, Puppies and Pet Parents!

A very happy spring!   I have been driving my pet parent
crazy....I have so much energy...I can't keep up with myself!

I am up at the crack of dawn (so my parent says), looking out into the night sky for glimpses of 'seagulls' with my 'motion detector eyes, I can see anything.  Of course they give themselves away by squawking, or better yet 'screeching' that makes my parent most annoyed..muttering odd noises under her breath as she tries to sleep.  LOL.  I tell the gulls - turn up the volume - meow!  I never seem to get the sea gulls to come in for a visit.... (mind you we did have 2 pigeons roast in the winter...for a few seconds on the window sill...I guess they didn't like my fangs...which I showed off????

You know I have a wonderful view of my urban dwelling.....I sit from my perch, which is better than trying to navigate a tree in the park. Sure enough the fire department is 20 feet away...but if I want attention..I'd rather be in the movies...LOL

Let me tell you a story.....my human like me likes the south west window to catch the afternoon sun.  After a long winter that lasted until April....it was 'let me outta here!

Well she was working on her 'jewellery' on my small coffee table I use to get to the window..meow, that's mine I tell her.   Yes, I am able to jump on my cabinet with my vets fleece and 2 cotton towels...I demand comfort...however... I decided to surprise my human....you never guess what I came up with.   I was observing her for a while...she sure was quiet......{as a kitten I used to jump from the floor to her lower back, then up her back on to her shoulders...just so I could bet at the credenza for food.   I had tiny legs and she was just the perfect human stepladder}.  I expect she has a dozen t-shirts with tiny holes from my tiny nails in them...LOL .   It worked until I got big and developed my 'rabbit type legs'  one leap for mankind at a single bound - which is 3 feet in the air!
I decided the best way to let her know I wasn't pleased with her occupying the seat and table..was to fool her completely -- I'd jump on her back....to stop her from working...what could she do but submit...to me!  Meow.....meow..

I jumped on her back, although I'm not that big, I'm long in the body with my huge "Maine Coon" tail....well it must have been a left over that God decided, he had a spare one hanging around.  I'm a Calico Tabby at least that is what my adoption papers say
Landing on her back was easy...I kept moving around....she got closer and closer to her knees until she was almost kissing the table...LOL -- Meow aren't I good!  Just when she was thinking to wiggle I turned around, and around...slapping my tail on her shoulder...that's it - let her know who is boss!!!!    I did this for 5 minutes ...you know it's like the human version of a 'time out for kids'.

They get the picture eventually even when they are 3 years of age.    Eventually I did get down...and decided to go an annoy her more by then asking for food. She moved over to the computer table thinking she would get a reprieve....until I hid under the table, stretched up on my haunches and pretended to sharpen my claws on her jeans...LOL...'attention seeking behavior'.  Watching those nature programs and cartoons gives me some good idea!

I then decided after much
activity to sit have a wash, then a drink.....

There is never a dull moment around here...

I have all my soft rubber balls hidden around the place, which make there appearance around 1 or 2 a.m.
Silver tin foil is the very best.   I can jump on the credenza where the ear phones are and rattle them...wakie wakie........(are you asleep.......if you were...now you're not - giving a wry smirk)...

Since I'm up most of the night.... I usually sleep during the day....I have lots of hiding places and if I plan it right. I hid under the bed..where she can't see me or out of 'arms reach' LOL

Well, I guess I had better wish her a 'Happy Mother's Day'  she really is a pretty good human as they go.    I had the chef Vanessa prepare a little something....I was going to add sardines, or fresh salmon - but I ate it instead  -- leaving the fruit instead.. LOL

Spring time is wonderful with so much energy....my dwelling is a virtual play pen for cats and kitties, we do allow dogs too of course.    Humans may leave their shoes at the door LOL.

Well, I'm off to play ....and create some
more ideas how to fool my pet parent........kittens it's a good time to watch and observe them for this will help you when your grow up into adulthood!  Come back for more antics from Cali's corner........it will make your pur.......

^..^ CATS: The Art of Sleep Deprivation 101 or PAWING FOR YOUR ATTENTION ^..^ -

Anticipating SPRING!

Hello MY Darling!

Welcome to another story from my files!

(Yawning and stretching).  Finally it's SPRING, I never thought it finally come to  "Great Far North".

Are we  'furry creatures' destined to keep their winter coats on until summer?  Mother Nature's Circadian Rhythm was way off LOL ^..^.

As a result of the early change of clocks before April, there have been some hillarious  musings in my in box! Thank you for all of you who have shared your stores!  This one goes out to Vanessa Rose.  I'd love to meet your beloved companion.....or would I......LOL

She writes:
Bed time MANIPULATION

"Well, the night time routine of getting my ALPHA FEMALE  (Little Lady)  was uneventful.Apart from the usual .....simply trying to get her to bed before 1:00 a.m.     The turning off of the television to the command "Bed Time, time for snacks".  Massage and a little brushing followed by kibble in 'HER MAJESTIES'  dish.

Sipping on my warm milk I envisioned a restful slumber.. As she proceeded to in hail the food like those 'mini hand held vacuums'  for quick clean ups.    Gobble, smack smack ..in dog like behavior!!!! Well, who else is here, did she think I WAS GOING TO EAT HER FOOD!!! The dish is as shiny as a new penny!!! LOL.

Oh yes.....
A little pat on the small of her back to "Go to Sleep, Settle".  Go far so good........^..^ The rhythmic  kneading (booying, booying...a bakers dozen in the making), fluffing up the bed sheets and comforter into that purfect nest.  !!  Umm this could be a while..(sigh)

I anticipated a long nights sleep and for once. I didn't have to get up; or stir to hear her rooting around in her toy box or hear items on the dining room table being knocked in a succession of PLONK, PLONK making it HER OWN..little did I know.

I was dreaming of an English village, enjoying a coffee around 11:00 a.m. daydreaming waiting for a friend to join me.   Off in a intuitive MUSE thinking of my next article. Reality came as a  rather loud, rude pursistent annoying  'tap, tap, tap'  Like a tea cup making contact into the saucer in a reckless heavy handed style devoid of any social graces associated with this gentle art of tea drinking!!!

Step 1:  HUMAN you will NOT SLEEP!!
A different reality --- fussy headed, time was distorted....I was waking up. (charming@@@!) Disorientation,  ...the loss of a  purfect sleep...what's going on!!! Rubbing my uncoordinated fingers over my eyes....to "Little Lady" staring at my with wide eyes of inquisition' FEED ME NOW!
Step 2: I have you UNDER MY SPELL......

Ignoring HER....covering my head with the sheets......all quiet .....ha bliss!!!!  Cat plonks herself on my pillow taking up all the room;  pushing her back feet into the back of my head......I was hovering on the threshold slipping off.

Step 3: Tap Tap, Tap I will WAKE YOU
Drifting off, again.....why is it sound so magnified when it is so quiet. There it goes again, tap, tap, dish, cup what? I tried to make sense of it all...in the dark.

Step 4:  IT'S WORKING
[Muttering &&&@@@!!! jibberish]. Reaching over to the jar of kibble, dolling out some into her dish. OK OK once she is fed that will be it 'slumber returns'...think again!.

Intuition is easy..... I was smart enough to place a small bowl of water on the bedside table. She is agile and self -serving when it suits HER . (I've seen stand on the edge of the bed balancing like a ballerina, anchoring her nails as a barnacle).

My voice cracks splitting the silence again....."Divva what is it now pray tell".  Looking around into her intuitive /intelligent eyes."Momma, I want water now"
......I remarked "Then go and get it, I'm not wet nursing you".   Her eyes glowered back.  (I knew that a look too well). I brought the water bowl over TO THE  pillow, wedging it carefully...holding it with my hand...(like an obedient servant she expected) Looking into my half slit eyes. The message was clear as mesmerizing eyes...trapped again thought I "Oh good I've got you UNDER MY SPELL".    My brain was trying to wrap my head around this BRAND NEW BEHAVIOR.

As a good pet mum I had always tried to be flexible to the Circadian Rhythms of MY cat....didn't I?  To be truthful, it didn't do well with my Diva Scottish ( peppered with Italian) temperament.
Step 5 : the VICTORY LICK!

She finished drinking....phew.....what time was it 5:30 a.m. (thank you very much)!! Great 4 hours sleep.......!!!!!!! I put the water dish back of her on the bedside table....covered myself yet again and told her to "settle" she new this command as it kitten....it has always worked...(yawning  I drifted into semi conscious state).

"Tap, tap, tap (oh not again, was that the clunk of the morning paper hitting the threshold of the door).  In the half twilight of the morning....there again...Divva...tapping to the purcussion of the dish!!!!

Relentless to WIN over this Divva as the last ditched attempt to prove I was the MORE intelligent species.  I then got more kibble and brought it over to her towel the bed and placed her catnip ball...this should do it...

Step 6:  Be nonchalant always WIN over YOUR HUMAN

What lesson did I learn that fitful night/morning!  "Never underestimate YOUR CAT".  Exceptional and highly intelligent. With every lit of cunning as a illusionist ...the master of deception.. She will always twist the situation to HER own advantage!!!"

Well, MY Darlings......remember a good scheme is worth the wait....

The Friday File: Gravity WINS in this scenario

Hello My Darling!

This is a CATS MEOW - Really!

MY inbox provided some amusing stories:   Causing me to shake with laughter ( I almost dropped my pencil in my milk bowl) ...... like jumping jack in a sand box!   Today's  topic is PHYSICS - GRAVITY

I decided to be a good editor and leave the content as is:

This story is about  "Miss M" . Every Diva has a story, her favorite pass time is catching butterflies, birds or any flying object!

The box was place on the dining room table, for my cat to lie in as she loves, them as much as shipping bag. The pretty ones with designs of fish, or animals with big handles.  The box was placed with the bottom facing forward looks harmless, it is.

{Physics: the force that attracts a body towards the centre of the earth, or towards any other physical body having mass}

Ooohhh, look what's inside (shopping to sleep on) NEW and FRESH, covered with plastic the kind that makes crinkle noise, that cats adore!!!
Like my new NEST...there is room for TWO

"Miss M" carefully pulled the items out, making a comfortable next.  All seems good for a short nap.  She decided a little grooming would be suitable (stretching she got up shifting, right and left to get her body just right.  Shifting so all of her weight was at the end of the corner of the box.   Gravity was the hidden element, the master of disguise (as it often is).
Puppies and kitten know all this until they get their sea legs.

Until gravity interceded with "Miss M" shifting her weight while grooming. The right end corner shifted causing a "V" formation to hang over the table. With the top portion acting like a tent, the "V" formation revealing a 'Miss M" performing like a fireman sliding down a fireman's poll.
Perfect BALANCE.....OR NOT

MOMMMY!!!!

Paws held high in submission to the sky "Mommy save me NOW". She remained unscathed due to a 'soft landing on her rabbit back legs'.

No harm came to "Miss M" she just needed more experience  and a little background on SCIENCE!

Remember:  Always send in "Jenni the Inspector" to check out your favorite 'box, shopping bag or favorite hiding space".    She is a stunt 'cat' actor and loves to discover new spaces.

Well my DARLINGS...................

See you next time on the Friday File:  The next topic is Separation Anxiety 101.

Snow Adventures - Bliss on a Winters Day

Hello MY darlings!

Did I perhaps disturb you from your winters nap (head tilting to the side)?   Wake up for a snow adventure with me.

In the early morning, the bright sun stirred me from
my slumber as butterflies dancing on the air.

I looked up to from my window, to a white blanket of freshly fallen snow nestled on the tops of buildings.  Creating a dusting of 'icing sugar' on the sidewalks below.

Humans with flapping coats, as if they were being nudged along by the soft wind... wrapping around their legs.  It was funny to watch them, trying to walk. Little children with bright woolen mittens interlocking their fingers with their parents.  Lifting their heads with mouths open to catch the snow flakes tasting them before they melted.   Cat's tongues are great for this due to their nobbled texture!

...
Fresh fallen snow add new beauty to nature's vista
A soft purrs emanated from my throat filling me with excitement.....snow, snow...snow woo hoo!!!. New adventures, the smell of fresh fallen snow, the snow flakes tickling my whiskers!!!!!.  I rang the chauffeur "James" we are off for a trip to the Lakeshore toward my favorite waterfront. Doffing his black cap and saluting, "Yes, Ma'am" was the polite reply.

JJ Plaus Park - Mississauga
In my kingdom Diva's would not be seen sporting those 'dog boots', besides which they are not featured in Prada. (singing her my favorite ditty)......"The Diva only wears Prada" - lol.

After a short drive we finally arrived.  I kept pacing back and forth in the back seat, anxiously waiting the release of the door catch.

Crystals held in nature

Nose to the ground, I sniffed picking up delicious scents. Checking for squirrel tracks looking for their pattern of escape... perhaps a snack in the making!

I smelt the air with my nose and let the snow flakes fall naturally on my whiskers, there was so much to see.  Frozen walkways, foot prints both of human, animals and birds.

I spotted a rather dashing cat sitting on a park bench reading 'cat's mag'.

He was was elegant...well groomed and of interest to me. He could win the yearly 'staring out contest'.  An afternoon sojourn.....perhaps a nice warm cappuccino ........surely the chauffeur needs to buff up the car. (Wry smile) I'll send him on a 'fishing expedition' ha ah .. the dreaded shopping spree!

"Tuxedo cat" has a rich baritone purr and  with a Austrian accent.  Umm..... I thought......I bet he knows a place to purchase SchwarzwΓ€lder Kirschtortespoke.

We exchanged polite conversation and found out my cousin lived two doors down the road in Vienna.   I gave the chauffeur the remainder of the afternoon off.

I remembered a good friend of mine suggested a coffee shop in Oakville.....

so off we ran .........for an adventure.....................you never know!  Snow adventures........take on amazing adventures.

A Diva enjoys a Mochacappucino

Remember:   MY Darlings, socialize, enjoy the moments in life, whether a sojourn over coffee or tea........surround yourself with friends....making happy memories.....

Christmas Eve - December 24, 2012

All done and dusted we are ready for CHRISTMAS!

Hello MY Darlings!

It's Christmas Eve and I have made it!

All the shopping is done, presents wrapped,
homemade cranberry sauce is resting in the fridge like a soft wind surrounding the Canadian Rockies!

The musical dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies echo's gently in the background. Drifting into the evening like a flowing cape against the back-of the night sky.

Strategy: How to make space under the tree?
I of course am whining (howling) as I know there is a Organic Chicken in the fridge.  My housekeeper has taken away the key to the larder as she know I will snoop!!!

There isn't much room under the tree anymore....

I've promised to be very good and not snoop

I take "Great comfort and joy" that everything is done!!  I expect you have had a busy time too, and perhaps like me am a little exhausted!

Well-deserved Cat nip - break - phew....

Well, the phone and email correspondence has been busy, family and friends calling.  This is a lovely time of the year to 'natter' (not a birds)
and have as the Brits say "have a chin wag"!!

Stories around the fire and a little 'smile' as humans call it.  I will have a warm dish of MILK!

Snack Size
We have many blessings to be thankful for (chicken, turkey, catnip, a warm place to sleep and a residence groomer and if you are lucky a "Lady in Waiting)!

Countess Von Whippet

MY young countess Whippet friend said "Always leave a little room, push yourself away from the table when full".....

MY Auntie Ness loves these
Have a wonderful Christmas MY darlings, peace, joy and much happiness.....rest now and tuck those paws in for a good-night sleep.

Day in the Park - Paws Wide Open!!

Once upon an Autumnal day I decided to give the chauffeur the afternoon off.  'James' had no idea of my plans and I wasn't about to tell him.

Dropping me off at Toogood Park in Toronto, the adventure was just about to begin.

I decided to re-live my kitten days by frockling in the leaves....purrhaps sniff out some 'flying squirrels'...a little snacky for my afternoon tea. Did someone say Souvlacki...

What adventures awaited me in this new playground outside of my kingdom..

only at playful kitten knows for sure!!!
Ah Squirrel Nests - possibly!

Riding the rails of Life...dare me!
A good run and scurry, wide open spaces.  My paws were itching to feel the wood under my feet (dig, dig, dig and free manicure)!!

What you expect me to fit!

I had visions of borrowing my cousins skate board, to hug the rails
(shakes head back to reality -- ok ok, leave that to the kids)!!

Maybe they will have to `shrink wrap`me..to get me into the tree....I don`t think I`ll fit. I don`t have a head for heights!!!!

UMMM.......Well I could of brought my understudy along.

Phew this is too much work.......better do some hunting for ( stomach growing - warning, warning  `Snack Attack`. Diva athlete stretches, into Yoga poses ready for ACTION)......

Very nice of nature to provide all the amenities!!
Menu board - very nice!
Boxed Lunch
What do you mean -- can you swim.....of course I can!  I simply get the chauffeur to jump in and do the hunting -- what did  you expect (looking up at the ceiling)!!!  Oh yeah, he is off until 6:00 p.m. (sigh)!!

Super Size ME

Well, after much effort I realized hunting was much to be desired!

Ah yes, MY secret compartment of my IPHONE has GREENIES snacks....saved by the say..........or else I`d have to bribe Auntie Nessie for money!!!  Next time, I`ll be in good with the game keeper!

Feeling rather tired I spotted a nice cozy bench.  The smell of the leaves was so overpowering After all the fab fresh air I`m ready.............................fir a wee CAT NAP..................
Capturing a CAT BENCH
James: YOU bring the car!!!

Well, MY darlings it was quite a day..........(excuse me YAWN).

See you next time - be sure to visit my other blogs articles...we love your comments!!!
