The Sunday File: Acrobatics, food morsels and more!

Hello MY Darlings!

Welcome yet again to the "Sunday File".

As I paw through my fan mail, one caught my curiosity!   What read through as something mundane and ordinary, turned into a comedy skit.

Mary writes, "It was a REGULAR  Sunday afternoon - so I thought. It had all the air of a  lazy quiet .....book reading kind of day.  Sun streaming in the window, with dancing shadows on the wall.  Cat curled up on the table, soaking in the sun....or as I thought....!!!

Lost in my book I delved in. Just then.....a sudden rapid movement caught my right eye."Mischief...was inside a shopping bag. Her head moving back and forth, shaking like a dust mop!!  No verbal noises of loud meows. Victorious  and proud...smack, smack the tongue found its treasure.  Asiago cheese crumb...or a archeological find......[any Calico with a high olfactory sense of smell could easily root it
Let me ENTERTAIN YOU!!!

out. Especially when she thinks she IS a blood hound].

Oh that is "Miss Mischief", up to her antics again (thought I) shaking my head I returned to my mystery......).

The bag and contents started to move, not like a wave in the ocean....no, no.

It reared up like an elephant trunk high in the air! The plastic bag surrounded the cat.  Then the cat and object was walking backwards...trying to escape.. Or was this a new circus act repeating itself ....'horses standing on their hind
legs'.

No, no, no...STOP... I uttered. The book dropped to the floor, shuddering as it fell finding it's resting place on the carpet.  "Bonk". Meanwhile "Mischief" proved HER POINT the show goes on.

Bolting upwards, I removed the offending bag...."Miss Mischief's" head looking bewildered and pleasantly satisfied with achieving her goal. The Asiago cheese chip crumbs fell to the floor;as a barnacle swept by an ocean wave. Temptation was her just reward. (Sigh)... I was reminded......never leave anything to chance, cat, dog or child around. Sure enough it will be an opportunity to get your attention...no matter WHAT!!

"Miss Mischief" looking bemused, washing her face in the sunlight. Finding herself a  sunlit carpet patch to fall asleep....stretching into yet another cat nap"!!! I think I will stick to this activity next time....(more creative) Paper-Bag-Cat-Puppet and leave the acting the 'Divva Jenni'!!!
Simply:  CAT IN the BAG

Well, that is a lovely story Mary, thank you for sharing.  Yes, indeed the more intelligent the cat or dog.....the more likely they are to get into mischief.  This is also quite true of human children, both of which I have observed. As I did some research on the matter myself.

It is quite unusual for cat's to have a highly developed olfactory sense of small. As we know a dog's sense of smell is 10,000 higher than a human, with the cat's a close second.

 Cat Senses - Smell

{A domestic cat's sense of smell is about fourteen times as strong as a human's. Cats have twice as many receptors in the olfactory epithelium (i.e. smell-sensitive cells in their noses) as people do, meaning that cats have a more acute sense of smell than humans. Cats also have a scent organ in the roof of their mouths called the vomeronasal (or Jacobson's) organ. When a cat wrinkles its muzzle, lowers its chin, and lets its tongue hang a bit, it is opening the passage to the vomeronasal. This is called gaping, "sneering", "snake mouth", or "flehming". Gaping is the equivalent of the Flehman response in other animals, such as dogs, horses and big cats.
It is commonly assumed that dogs possess a superior sense of smell among domesticated animals. However, new studies have shown that cats average 200 million olfactory receptors (though numbers vary by breed), higher than the average number of receptors in dogs}.

THE CAT WINS YET AGAIN!!!
We would like to dedicate this to all Calicos, and especially Aunt Dorothy who's birthday it is today.  A wonderful cat lady of Amberwood Road!!

Friday File: Who Said the Show has to Go ON at the VETS

Well hello MY Darlings!

I've been away mousing....nice to be back!

Welcome to 'The Friday File" what a purfect day.
I've decided to take a cat nap and let my faithful Secretary click away at the computer!

There have been a lot of emails flying into my 'in box' this week.  The subject of behavior issues.
(Reading through, this......tickled my whiskers to no end).

Oh yes, as a practitioner I see a quite a cross-section of 'personalities' in my practice, I'm sure the Veterinarians say the same (LOL).  Feline, canine, or humans all have certain characteristics that defines: who they are, that goes with the territory.  I've selected a email,  I shall call her "Vanessa" her true name has been protected to save the innocent!

"Dear Counsellor" can you address the issue of 'Diva' personality how to deal her at the Vets?
Well WHAT?

Here is her story:

"Vanessa writes: My calico cat is a Diva in her own right, even as a kitten she knew who she was. With her purfect airs and graces were clear  at a tender age.  "Jenn, Jenn" was no exception.  We took her to her annual exam at the Veterinarians.  There she is known as "Little Lady" (obviously they don't know her THAT WELL).

Over the years I've developed keen sense of intuition to help me read  through her, that doesn't always work.  I gave Jenn, jenn my faithful companion several syringes of water to aid the process along (otherwise she would cross her paws an ignore me).

Stop Staring: I haven't done anything yet!
All the technicians know her and games she gets up to! (Vanessa often wanted to hid under the benches in the waiting room with and red face)!  The procedure was to extract a urine sample..simply routine ...right?  "Jenn, Jenn" had her own ideas, in destroying the 'sterile field'.  As an actress in her own right...she is quite manipulative! Intuitively, sitting in the waiting room Vanessa thought - I hope this isn't a repeat performance?.

Performance time! The technicians with had soft voices working quietly.  Time to get into the ACT! All was in order for the moment. With no fanfare announced 'Jenn jenn' tinkled on the table! She was even purring in defiance!

The chirping of the phone distracted Vanessa from the Pet magazines she was reading.  "We have to now wait for hours to get another sample echoed the receptionist. (Rolling her eyes to the ceiling and shaking her head). Pet parent responded.
"Oh I see was the reply, can you give her syringes of water again, please".
MY show...you WAIT!

Well the clock moves very slowly at the Vets or any medical office when you ARE WAITING!

Jenn, Jenn was very nonchalant, deciding to fall asleep!!!  The minutes rolled into hours, 1, 2 and 3. at the precise cat moment 9.45 p.m.  This was the third hour! The technician was able to extract the sample".   Just another day at the Vets!

I Got YOU - Show Time

The phrase "Patience is Virtue" understood by a cat or dog. Seasoned Dog Handlers or Obedience trainers will tell you!

Well, well, well, that is quite the story (I'm sure gentle readers you can relate to that). (Washes face, while thinking)!

Summary:

Clearly, we have seen some typical "Diva traits" here.  As pet parents, there is often little you can do....when trying to predict feline or canine behavior.

Even with ALL the careful measures with TLC (tender love and care).

Take this recipe with you equal measure:
1> Spoonful of love, with plenty of pinches of reassurance, praises, eye contact (whenever possible).  2>Take one glass of PATIENCE with a ounce of HUMILITY and LAUGHTER.   3>  A huge cup of tea for the pet parent upon returning home, and a dish of milk for the patient.
4. Stir with a spoon of EXPERIENCE for you never know it may end up in a blog page
and provide some entertainment for "Pet Parents" to share!

Ok...Lets go Home and EAT

Have a purfect weekend -- see you next time

City to City: Vienna

 Hello My DARLINGS!

I've decided to pay a little visit to Vienna myself, the travel bug got me so I decided to leave my human at home! LOL

I bet you thought 'felines' don't have a sweet tooth, well some of us do! I have a sophisticated palate and love to ROUTE (Root) it out.  :^..^:
 M I L K ,  C R E AM and any DELISH!!

Map:  Germany- Vienna

A Konditorei typically offers a wide variety of pastries and is like a little café. In Germany, Austria and Israel it is a very popular custom to go to a Konditorei to have a cake and some coffee or hot chocolate mid-afternoon.

The profession of the Konditor

developed from that of the baker. Once the bakers of medieval times (15th century) mastered the art of baking bread, some started to rarefy the dough with honey, dried fruits and spices. These specialists called themselves Lebküchler,

Lebküchner or Lebzelter. They founded a guild in 1643 in the area in and around Nürnberg.
Lebkuchner

{At the same time, the Lebkuchen bakers ran a second trade using wax, a side product of honey: they became chandlers, supplying churches and private households with artistic candles, wax figures and pictures made of wax. They carved wooden molds themselves and used these to pour magnificent pictures made of wax}.

My understudy supplies me with the "real deal"

  A few Konditoreien practised
the sophisticated art of the chandlers until recent times.

In a her best German accent Diva meows "
^ .. ^ (Whistfully) Guten Tag, Art Madam! Bitte richten Sie mich zu den besten Konditorei in Wien, wo sie haben eine Fülle von Sahne. Danke!

English:
^..^ (Whistfully) Good afternoon, kind Madam! Please direct me to the best pastry shop in Vienna,  where they have an abundance of cream.  Thank you!

Well, I'm going out to the Vienna Wiener Konzerthaus

With a swirl of my Opera cape I'm on my way..................

Well, I'm making my 'wish list' to give to my servant (LOL):

Did you know?
Salmon are fish that belong to the family of Salmonidae (biologists classify types of organisms according to similar characteristics: the term “families” encompasses the more commonly used terms “genus” and “species.” Within the Salmonidae family are the genus Salmo, which contains Atlantic salmon, and the genus Oncorhynchus, which contains Pacific salmon released into the Great Lakes, trout, and char. A common characteristic of salmonids is the presence of an adipose fin just in front of the tail on the dorsal (top) side. In general, these are all bony fish that are caught commercially from the wild, a dietary mainstay of aboriginal populations, sought after by recreational anglers, and farmed intensively because of their desirable taste and nutritional characteristics.
